Need a break without breaking the bank? Then, the best thing to do is to go backpacking. It is considered to be one of the most comfortable, fun, and economical ways to de-stress. To have a smooth sailing trip, there are a few things that you need to have along with you.
Amongst them, a clean stove is very important. Maintaining it is necessary so that you do not have to buy a new one all the time. It will also ensure that you will have healthy and well-cooked food. Hence, you must know how to clean a backpacking stove properly.
There are only a few items that you will need in order to clean the stove. These are a screwdriver, a piece of cloth or handkerchief, white gas and a stove tool, which comes along with your camping gas stove when you purchase it. Now you can follow the process of cleaning that we have mentioned below.
To start the cleaning process, you will have to clean the fuel line. This part is crucial as it is the one that is responsible for supplying the fuel for the stove to light up. Cleaning it regularly will ensure that you will have an uninterrupted supply and the right amount of fuel.
The initial thing that you have to do is to locate the fuel line. You will find it inside the sheath, and this is usually connected to the bottle or tank where the fuel is put. If you are having some trouble finding it, look for a silver object since that is the tip of the line of fuel.
This will be usually at the edge of the sheath, poking outwards. Once you find it, you now need to insert the end of the fuel line in any one of the holes of the stove tool. Once done, all you need to do now is to twist it so that you can get a hold of this fuel line.
After getting a hold, pull it up so that the line and the sheath can separate. By doing so, the line will also separate itself from the rest of the stove. Now, you can use the white gas to clean the fuel line completely. As you use the white gas, be certain to get rid of any dirt, sand, soot and the kinds.
Once you are done cleaning the fuel line, it is now time to clean up the sheath which you have detached from the former. To do so, you need to insert the freshly clean fuel line into the sheath by applying a little pressure. If it is too tight, you could use a little bit of elbow grease.
The shaker jet, as similar to the fuel line, also has a role in supplying fuel to the stove. In order to clean it, simply pull it out while ensuring that you cause no damage to any of the other parts of the gas canister.
Once this is accomplished, you can remove the cap of the fuel which you will be able to find right at the bottom of the gas canister. Clean it thoroughly by removing any dirt from it, and take the cleaning process a bit further by putting some white gas over it.
When you remove the cap, you will expose the area where the fuel actually passes through to enter the gas canister. This area is basically the part that holds the line of the fuel in the stove. Pull out this portion so that you can see a small, smooth, and round holes with flat sides, which is called as the jet.
This is the part that needs to be cleaned from the inside out and thoroughly. As you may have noticed by now, cleaning this part does need some kind of skill, or else there is a possibility that you may end up damaging the gas canister.
Once you have removed all the parts and cleaned it thoroughly, it’s time that you turn these parts upside down to let them air dry. Keep them in a well-ventilated area and make sure that there are no signs of water anywhere on and inside the gas canister and its parts. If there is water, it will cause it to rust and ultimately render the stove useless.
The most significant advantage of having a clean gas canister stove is that it will work far better than one that isn’t clean. Also, there will be no fuel wastage as a clean stove will offer you a better efficiency of the fuel as well as flame control. Additionally, regular cleaning and maintenance will make sure that no rust or corrosion is formed on the stove which will in-turn make it last longer.
Storing the stove with particular care is as important as cleaning it. After you are done cleaning and drying it, you can wipe it, especially the inside, with a clean and dry cloth to ensure that it is dried completely. After that, put it in a tightly sealed plastic bag or a designated bag.
That is done to ensure that no insects can enter the stove and the fuel line as they’ll end up blocking it. In addition, if there is any liquid fuel still left in the stove canister, remove and transfer it back to the fuel can. That will prevent any kind of build-up on the fuel tube. Lastly, store it in a dry place.
The process on how to clean a backpacking stove may seem like a tedious job, but constant care and maintenance will ensure that it will not only last longer but also work efficiently. It will also save you some money since the fuel is used maximally. You must also remember that it is equally important that you store your stove correctly.
